Dealing with Temper Tantrums in Kids

Temper Tantrums are emotional outbursts of anger and frustration. Tantrums typically begin around age 12 to 18 months and reach their peak during the “terrible temper”. This is the period in child development when children start to gain a sense of self and assert their independence from their parents. It’s also a time when children can’t speak yet well enough to make their needs known. This combination is a “perfect storm” for temper tantrums. Tantrums are a normal part of childhood development and they don’t occur because you have been a bad parent or because you have done something wrong. Temper tantrums are exceedingly common in children, especially between ages 1-4. Some children are more prone to tantrums, particularly kids who are intense, hyperactive or moody and kids who don’t adapt well to new environments.

A tantrum is an episode of extreme anger and frustration characterized by crying, screaming, violent, body motions including throwing things, falling to the floor and banging one’s head, hands and feet against the floor.

Signs/Symptoms of Temper Tantrums.

Temper tantrum is a very common occurrence in pre-school children. The parents must have knowledge of the following symptoms:

  • Shouting, crying and screaming
  • Rolling on the floor
  • Kicking and biting unexplainably
  • Stamping foot on the ground
  • Pounding fists on a surface
  • Holding breath for a long time
  • Breaking things and stamping on them
  • Hitting a person or a pet animal
  • Stubborn attitude
  • Pulling hair and making unusual faces
  • Resistive behaviour when someone tries to show affection

Causes of Temper Tantrums:

Temper Tantrum arises from several factors. Most common factors are as follows:

  • Mental irritation and agitation when the people around cannot understand or not listening to the child.
  • Lack of words to fully express the feelings and demands.
  • Irritation aroused due to the inability to solve different problems on their own.
  • Anger and Stubbornness when people discourage the child from different activities.
  • Tiredness and Sleeplessness
  • Anxiety, discomfort or unexplained fear.
  • Inherited Behavioural Traits
  • Overstimulation due to activity and excitement.
  • Disruption of normal routines such as timely feeding, bathing and sleeping.
  • Certain development phenomenon like “teething”.
  • Teasing or irritation caused by some unknown person.

Preventions/Dealing with Temper Tantrums:

Tired, hungry and over stimulated children are more likely to experience temper tantrums. If you’re aware of your child’s feelings, you might be able to sense when big feelings are on the way of tantrums and you can easily reduce the stress of the child.

  • TALK ABOUT EMOTIONS

Talk about emotions with your child. When your child struggles with a difficult feelings, encourage him/her to feel good and happy. Acknowledge your child’s frustration and let your child know that you understand their emotions can sometimes help them calm down, especially if they’re looking for attention.

  • COMMUNICATE WITH THEM

Parents should communicate with their kids. Don’t underestimate his activity to understand what you are saying. Tell him the plan for the day and stick to your routine to minimize surprise.

  • TEACH YOUR CHILD

Teach your child other ways of dealing with frustration. Children who are old enough to talk can be reminded to use their words instead of screaming.

  • APPRECIATE

Whenever your child behaves well, you should praise your kid to their behaviour.  This will reinforce good behaviour and lower down the temper in your kids. You can appreciate them by saying some simple phrases such as “Very Good! You did it very well”; “Keep it up” or by awarding them some prize such as chocolate, their favourite food or taking them to their favourite place.

  • ESTABLISH A ROUTINE

  • BE A ROLE MODEL

Kids look up to their parents and are constantly observing their behaviour. If your child sees you handling your anger and frustration calmly, they will be more likely to mimic your behaviour when experiencing these feelings.
