What is Suicide? How to Prevent Suicide and Overcome Suicidal Thoughts

Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one's own death. It can be committed through self-destructive behavior, such as by hanging or drugs, or through carbon monoxide poisoning. Suicide may result from mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder.

Suicidal ideation is thoughts of killing oneself. Suicidal ideation can be fleeting and come and go, or it can occur over an extended period of time.

What causes suicide?

People who commit suicide often feel hopeless, helpless, or like a burden to others. They may believe there's no other way out of their problems. Some people who attempt suicide are angry or distressed about something specific, while others feel this way all the time. They may also be dealing with mental health conditions such as depression or bipolar disorder. Substance use disorders (like alcohol or drugs) can make it harder to cope with painful feelings and problems in life. Many factors contribute to suicide including:

  • Signs of depression (feeling sad, having mood swings)
  • Alcohol or drug use problems (using drugs or alcohol to cope with life)
  • Relationship problems (with family or friends)
  • Feeling hopeless about things changing for the better

Suicide is a complex act. It is not simply an impulsive response to stress or depression; it is the result of a number of factors working together to make suicide seem like the only solution to a person's problems. Suicidal thoughts can be frightening and uncomfortable, especially if you don't know what to do about them or how to prevent them from getting worse. The first step is learning more about why people think about suicide, what kinds of things can make suicidal thoughts worse, and how to help yourself or someone else who may be having suicidal thoughts.

Here are some of the most common reasons for having suicidal thoughts:

1. Depression

Depression is a serious medical condition that affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. People with depression may feel hopeless, sad, discouraged, or irritable. They may also lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. If you’re feeling this way consistently for more than two weeks, see your doctor to determine if you’re depressed.

2. Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder (also known as manic-depressive disorder). Bipolar disorder causes extreme shifts in mood, energy, activity levels and the ability to carry out daily tasks. The symptoms of bipolar disorder include periods of mania (highs) and depression (lows), along with periods without symptoms in between. Mania can cause reckless behavior and severe changes in mood — such as feeling overly energetic or irritable — while depression can make it difficult to enjoy anything or get pleasure from life.

3. A history of trauma

Some people who have experienced traumatic events in their lives may find that they struggle with thoughts of suicide because they associate happiness with past traumas. For example, someone who was abused or assaulted might find happiness difficult because they associate it with the abuse they suffered in the past. The same applies if someone was bullied at school or had a parent die prematurely; they may feel unable to enjoy themselves.

4. Money problems and Issues

Money problems can be a big cause of suicidal thoughts. People who are going through a financial crisis may feel that they are unable to cope with the situation and may not know what to do next. They feel helpless, hopeless, and powerless. Having suicidal thoughts can make things worse because you may think that no one cares about you or will miss you when you're gone.

5. Addiction to bad things

Some people develop an addiction to something like drugs or alcohol which makes them want to die more often than others who don't have such addictions. When someone is addicted, they need more of their drug in order for it to work properly — this means taking more drugs than usual or taking them at different times than usual can cause an overdose which could lead to death by suicide if help hasn't been sought out.

How to Overcome Suicidal thoughts and prevent Suicide?

Suicidal thoughts and suicide can be a very serious problem. You may need to get help from someone you trust, or your doctor.

1. Talk to someone

Talking with someone who cares about you is an important part of taking care of yourself when you're feeling down. If your friends and family aren't helpful or don't understand what's going on, consider talking with a professional depression counselor or therapist.

2. Seek medical help if needed

If your feelings of suicide become intense or last for more than a few days, see your doctor or go to an emergency room right away for help. Don't be afraid to talk about suicide with your doctor or another mental health professional; this could be the first step in getting appropriate treatment for your condition and saving your life.

3. Keep yourself Socially Active

Keep social support strong by engaging in activities with friends and family members that give you pleasure, even if they don't serve as distractions from your troubles (for example: going out for dinner or a movie). This is also an important way to maintain relationships that can help you through difficult times.

4. Write down your feelings

Write down how you feel and what has happened recently in your life that may have contributed to these feelings (e.g., arguments with friends or family). Writing things down can help clarify what is happening in your mind and make sense

5. Know that suicide is not the answer

Suicide is not an easy way out of your problems. It doesn't solve anything because it ends your life and leaves behind people who loved you dearly — people who are going through pain after losing someone they cared about dearly. Even if they do find peace eventually, they will never forget what happened to their loved one or why they died in the first place.

6. Make a safety plan.

Make sure your family members and friends know how to help keep you safe if you're feeling suicidal. Include in your plan what they should do to help you get treatment if you are unable to get help on your own. Include contact information for crisis lines such as Lifeline and Youthline in your plan so that you can get help even when no one else is available to talk with you about what's going on from their perspective or provide suggestions for coping skills that might be helpful for managing distressing

Conclusion

When we have suicidal thoughts, one way to overcome this is to connect with others who may be struggling. Connecting with someone who may be going through the same thing can be an effective way of coping, and educate us more on ways how to overcome suicidal thoughts. Remember that you are not alone. People out there want to help and people understand. It can be difficult to talk openly and honestly about suicidal thoughts, but this is important because preventing them can save lives. There are many other resources available online and in your community that you can use to access professional help from trained mental health specialist.
